Grave I.A.2. Son of Hannah Dowthwaite, of Eagle Hill, Olds, Alberta, Canada and the late Joseph Dowthwaite (Source : C.W.G.C.). Recommended for the DCM and awarded the Military Medal for his action as Signaller at Bernafay Wood in July 1916. Wounded in Delville Wood. Killed in action on the 12th April 1917 in the improvised and disastrous attack of the 9th (Scottish) Division on the German positions in the East of Fampoux. The 2nd SAI, who went in 400 strong, lost 16 officers and 285 men. |
