William Henry SMITH

Grave III.G.23.

Adopted son of Rhoda Walkden, of 2nd House, Berricade Rd, Mayville, Durban, Natal. Native of Bolton, Lancs, England (Source : C.W.G.C.).

2nd S.A.I., B Coy

Died on the 15th October 1916 of wounds received in front the Butte de Warlencourt. On the 12th October, the 2nd and 4th S.A.I. attacked Snag and Tail Trenches. The assault died away because of machine guns nests, placed well back in prepared positions, which caught the attacking waves at long range. The two battalions, which had suffered heavily, were relieved by the 3rd S.A.I. during the night of the 12th-13th October.
