This batik shows the bell-tower of the Basilica of Albert. In January 1915, a German shell blew up on the base of the statue of the Virgin which caused it to lean over precariously. It remained in this position till April 1918 when British artillery (the town having fallen in German’s hands) totally destroyed the Basilica.
